  • One of the least known aspects of Communist rule is the treatment by the North Vietnamese Communists of those who had fought in the South Vietnamese army. The long term torture and deprivation of them in so-called "re-education camps" is one of the horrors of the 20th century. One man, Michael Peavy Do, wrote an account of his 10 years in "re-education" camps and prisons. His ankles were put in shackles. He was on the verge of starvation. His book, "The Depths of Hell" is written in a simple, compelling way in flawed English. The Communist conquerors told lower rank S Vietnamese army officers to go to re-education camps for 15 days. In fact, many were kept for years in what were, in reality, prisons. It was a trap.
