The past elections have not yet been fully calculated (unfortunately, in some states there are a number of problems that indicate the imperfection of the American electoral system), however, it is possible to draw intermediate results of the past midterms, which are important for the whole world, including Russia.

  • 1. The Republicans didn't get the results they were supposed to. It seemed that the "red wave" as a result of economic problems will cover the Democrats. After the victory of the president from one party in recent years in the United States, the opposite always wins. However, the Republicans have definitely not been able to win the race for the Senate, and the Democrats may even increase their advantage. Much of this is due to weak candidates in key states - a Muslim homeopathic doctor in Pennsylvania or a former professional football player in Georgia, who can hardly be called professional politicians. It will be important for libertarians in Russia not to repeat the mistakes of the Republican Party and to nominate candidates that are stronger and more pleasing to the median voter.
  • 2. In the lower house, the Republicans showed slightly more convincing results - they managed to take almost half of the districts of the left of New York, and it looks like they will receive a significant majority at least in the House of Representatives. This will allow them to have a strong enough influence on various political processes, and most likely we will see even more compromise rule in the next two years.
  • 3. Support for Ukraine may be reduced, but not significantly. The Republican Party as a whole is more responsible in spending money and more worried about possible corruption, which will lead to tougher demands on Ukraine. In addition, there are more isolationists among the Republican electorate itself, according to polls, who do not see the need to fight against the current Russian regime. However, this will only be a reduction in aid, and not a complete rejection of it. The same can be said about cooperation with Taiwan.
  • 4. Biden is unlikely to give up the idea of running for a second term, incumbent presidents very rarely give up the fight to keep their post. It is likely that either Trump himself will run against him (which is probably not the best decision, especially after losing the Senate election) or the popular governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis. In the near future, those interested in American politics should follow the Republican primaries.
  • 5. American libertarians have again performed very poorly, even by their own standards. Their stake on harsh criticism of the foreign policy of the current administration, which at some point even began to repeat the most terrible clichés of Russian propaganda, did not lead to electoral success. Let's hope that American libertarians realize their mistakes and change their foreign policy views.
