Canadian scientists brought up a whole study that (who would have thought!) The public status of the victim can be used by insidious manipulators. And the owners of the dark triad of personal qualities (Machiavellianism, narcissism, psychopathy) are especially prone to virtue signaling victimhood.

"The current literature on 'competitive victimization' captures the use of 'victim signals' by various social groups and provides evidence that it functions as a strategy for redistributing resources. Thus 'victim signals' justify demands for retribution against a perceived oppressor. Retribution is often takes the form of compensation, redistribution of resources towards the alleged victim. Assignment of victim status can also contribute to the redistribution of resources through the formation of moral immunity. Moral immunity protects victims from any criticism of the methods they use to meet their demands. In other words, victim status can justify deceit, threats, or even violence committed by alleged victims in order to achieve goals. Simultaneously, the assignment of victim status can cause the observer to consider the person less guilty, forgive him for violations, such as stealing property or hurting someone, which would otherwise cause condemnation. Finally, the assignment of the status of a victim elevates a person psychologically, in the sense of his subjective sense of legitimacy, the right to express his opinion. A person who has such a psychological platform can easily dismiss or ignore objections from those who are not considered victims, due to their unfoundedness. Conversely, those who do not give "victim signals", do not publicly disclose their misadventures and inconveniences, are less likely to receive compensation, moral immunity, protection from accusations, or a psychological platform - therefore, it is more difficult for them to participate in the reallocation of resources.
